Fall RainBarrel Tips
For those of you who already own RiverSafe RainBarrels, we hope you've had a great season of rain water harvesting and use and we would like to remind you of a few end of season tips.
Your RiverSafe RainBarrel can be used until the temperature begins dipping below 0°C, which in Southern Ontario is usually mid-November. To prepare your RainBarrel for winter we recommend;
1) Emptying your RainBarrel by using up any remaining water. Once empty, leave the tap on in the "open" position over winter.
When water freezes it expands. This process causes damage to everything from roads to buildings to sewers and can also damage your RainBarrel.
2) Turn your RainBarrel diverter valve to "Bypass".
This will bypass any water from your roof down your downspout instead of into the RainBarrel.
Also: This is a good time to check and clean your filters before winter.
If you have any maintenance or care questions please contact us at rainbarrels@riversides.org.

Crapshoot: The Gamble with our Wastes (2010-10-06)

CRAPSHOOT: THE GAMBLE WITH OUR WASTES Wednesday, October 6th at 7 PM - FREE ADMISSION Directed by Jeff McKay, 2003, 52 min 43 s
A hazardous mix of waste is flushed into the sewer every day. The billions of litres of water - combined with unknown quantities of chemicals, solvents, heavy metals, human waste and food - where does it all go? And what does it do to us?
Filmed in Italy, India, Sweden, the United States and Canada, this bold documentary questions whether the sewer is actually compounding our waste problems. While scientists warn of links between sewage practices and potential health risks, activists, engineers and concerned citizens challenge our fundamental attitudes to waste. Does our need to dispose of waste take precedence over public safety? What are the alternatives? A panel discussion will follow the screening. Green Screens partners films from the NFB with experts and panellists selected by the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy. If you are interested in the environment, Green Screens will entertain and inform you. Follow the NFB Mediatheque on Facebook, Foursquare or Twitter and follow CIELAP on Twitter!
