Types of Sewers
There are three main types of sewers: - Storm Sewers: Collect and move stormwater directly into nearby water bodies.
- Sanitary Sewers: Receive indoor waste (toilets, showers, sinks, dishwashers) and move it to wastewater treatment centres within the city.
- Combined Sewers: These are a mix of storm and sanitary sewers. Water from both is sent to treatment centres. During significant wet weather flow events, the volume of combined sewage may exceed the capacity of the sewer and some of the combined sewage may overflow untreated into the lake. These types of sewers have not been built since the 1950s, but are still present in many older sections of Toronto.
